The First Dental Visit
Gone are the days when going to the dentist was a daunting, nerve wracking experience for children! If you are unsure how or when to bring your child to see the dentist for the first time, read on for some helpful advice.
Lead by example
As parents we have all experienced the fact that our children do as we do, rather than do as we say! Visiting the dentist is a great example of this. If you model healthy behaviours in yourself, such as brushing and flossing every day and attending your dental check-ups regularly, your children will become familiar with these routines and are less likely to question adopting the habits themselves.
Messaging starts at home
Children are not born fearing the dentist. Oftentimes well-meaning relatives may jokingly pass on their dental anxiety to children, not realising that they are in fact shaping the child’s perceptions of visiting the dentist. Avoid joking about it being scary or something to be anxious about and instead focus on how exciting it will be to have a ride in the magic chair and for the dentist to count their teeth and see how wonderful and sparkly they are! This is going to be the HIGHLIGHT of the day!
When should my child have their first dental visit?
Children should begin dental visits from as young as 12 months, where the dentist will discuss tooth eruption and teething, oral hygiene and diet, while you sit in the dental chair with your child sitting on your knee. This is an important first step in establishing healthy feeding and oral hygiene habits as your child develops, while giving you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and allowing your child to become comfortable in the dental setting through early, regular exposure.
At Clarence Dental, we have many 2 and 3 generational families, attending since they themselves were children, now bringing their own kids in for dental care. After nearly 40 years in Indooroopilly, investing in our patients as they grow over generations is something we absolutely love and is part of our ethos here – we are family.
