The Silent Threat: Understanding Gum Disease
Welcome back to our Dental Health Week series! Today, we're shining a light on a sneaky dental issue that often goes unnoticed until it's too late: gum disease.
Gum disease doesn't usually come with a warning sign like pain until it's already advanced. This can make it tricky to spot and treat early on, which is why regular dental check-ups are crucial.
Here's what you need to know about gum disease:
Stages of Gum Disease:
Gingivitis: This is the earliest stage of gum disease and is characterised by red, swollen gums that may bleed easily when you brush or floss.
Periodontitis: If gingivitis isn't treated, it can progress to periodontitis. This stage involves the gums pulling away from the teeth, forming pockets which trap plaque and can become infected. Over time, the bone and tissue supporting the teeth can be damaged.
Symptoms (or Lack Thereof):
As mentioned earlier, gum disease often doesn't cause pain in its early stages. This can deceive people into thinking their gums are healthy when they may actually be at risk.
Other signs to watch for include persistent bad breath, receding gums, changes in the way your teeth fit together, and pain.
Prevention and Treatment:
The good news is that gum disease is preventable with good oral hygiene habits. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and regular dental check-ups are your best defences.
If you suspect you have gum disease or notice any symptoms, don't wait for pain to occur. Early intervention can prevent the condition from worsening and causing irreversible damage.
Remember, your gums are the foundation of your smile. Taking care of them is just as important as caring for your teeth. Stay tuned for more tips throughout Dental Health Week to keep your oral health in tip-top shape!
