Oral Health During Pregnancy: Why It Matters for Mum and Baby

Morning Sickness

The morning sickness that often comes with pregnancy can lead to an increase in acid in your mouth, which can cause damage to your teeth and gums. To help protect your oral health, rinse your mouth with water after you vomit and brush your teeth gently with fluoridated toothpaste. 

Gag reflex

Some mothers to be experience an increase in their gag reflex during pregnancy.  This can make thorough cleaning of the teeth a challenge.  If you experience this, it is important to do your best with the toothbrush, and to maintain your flossing and regular dental check-ups where your dentist can offer tailored advice.

Gum Health

Pregnancy can also cause changes in your gums, making them more sensitive and prone to bleeding. This is due to the increased levels of hormones in your body during pregnancy. It's important to maintain good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing and flossing, to keep your gums healthy and prevent gum disease. If you experience bleeding or swelling in your gums, be sure to talk to your dentist about it.

Cavities
